A little bit of History

We have done some digging and so far have found Quarry House and the cottage are on the maps as far back as 1870 (see below right), it’s thought that the cottage back then was the site office for the quarry, the road at the front of the cottage is the old A1, the new A1 started to be built in 1939 but was delayed by the second World War and was finally completed in 1950.

At some point after 1870 Quarry House became a Pub (Northumberland Arms). The south facing section was the stables for the horses and above that the hay store, with the northern single story section being the blacksmiths.

The cottage we’re told was home to the seamstress who made wedding dresses for those on their way to Scotland to get married.

The cottage was last lived in around the 1970’s, the owner was a Mrs Laurie hence the name.

The tabletop on the patio outside the kitchen is part of the original shutters from the front window you can see in the photo below.
